An eight-day, seven-night backpacking expedition exploring the must-see highlights of Yosemite National Park’s backcountry.

  • Walk sections of the legendary John Muir Trail

  • Soak in panoramic views atop Cloud’s Rest

  • Climb Yosemite’s highest trailed mountain pass

  • Relax each night beneath a canopy of stars

  • Level up your backpacking skills in a supportive environment

Yosemite is considered by many to be a crown jewel in the National Park system, and it’s world-famous for good reason. From glimmering granite peaks, to towering ancient forests, to crystal clear creeks and alpine lakes. You can spend a lifetime exploring Yosemite National Park and you’d still just be scratching the surface.

Our route will link together some of the must-see highlights of Yosemite’s backcountry. Along the way, we’ll discuss human history alongside natural history and contemplate the meaning of wilderness and the role of our national parks. We’ll traverse the legendary John Muir Trail, where pristine meadows give way to towering granite cliffs. As we ascend Clouds Rest, we’ll soak in panoramic views of Yosemite Valley – a vantage point most visitors will never see. All the while, we’ll pay respect to the Ahwahneechee people’s ancestral connection to this majestic place as we follow in their footsteps.

Trip itinerary

We designed this trip as an advanced capstone expedition suitable for experienced and fit backpackers. Although you can spend a lifetime scratching the surface of Yosemite National Park’s wild backcountry, this extended itinerary links together some of the best highlights. With an included first-night stay in the cozy canvas tents of Tuolumne Meadows Lodge, it’s a great bang for your buck.

Backpacking requires flexibility. So please note that the exact details of our itineraries are occasionally adjusted due to permit availability, trail conditions, or other factors outside our control. Rest assured, we’ll do everything in our power to stick to our plan or beat it with something better.

Why Wilder Walks

The goal of each Wilder Walks adventure is to help you feel comfortable, confident, and present outdoors so you can deepen your connection with nature. Our trips are built around:

  • Ultralight and minimalist gear to help you focus on the world around you rather than the weight on your back

  • Small group sizes with lots of personal attention and opportunities to practice essential backpacking skills

  • Unique routes designed to showcase the unique ecological qualities of the places we explore

  • Expert guidance from a highly experienced and professionally trained trip leader

What’s included:

  • All necessary permits and campsite fees.

  • 5% donation to Big City Mountaineers, helping fund backpacking trips for California youth

What’s not included:

  • Essential clothing, footwear, or any other personal items. Gear selection is a core part of our program, and we will provide guidance on the best gear to bring.

Alex’s thorough pre-trip preparation was top-notch. I felt confident in our gear, route, and options to adjust for weather as we went along
— Jessie from Los Angeles
I consider myself a skilled backpacker but to put the planning process and decision-making in Alex’s hands was a true gift. Alex was super informative and engaging and had so much great information on geology specific to the area.
